McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Whitworth fell 5-0 to Whitman in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference women's tennis tournament on Saturday afternoon at Linfield College.
The Pirates end the season with a final record of 13-7. The Missionaries improve to 16-4 and advance to face the host Wildcats in the championship final on Sunday.
Whitman took an almost insurmountable 3-0 lead following the three doubles matches. Jessi Steele and Saryn Mooney came closest to getting the Pirates a point, but they fell 8-6 to Morgan Lawless and Emily Rolston. Courtney Lawless and Alyssa Roberg defeated Alli Marshall and Erica Bosman 8-2 at #1 doubles. Maddy Webster and Hannah Palkowitz beat Megan Wingfield and Claire Hemming 8-4 at #3 doubles.
The NWC rules dictate that the team match is over once a team reaches the necessary five points. Only two singles matches were completed and both were over relatively quickly. Courtney Lawless beat Bosman 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles and Morgan Lawless topped Steele 6-0, 6-2 at #3 singles.
The Pirates were ahead in three of the singles matches. Mooney was leading Kate Kunkel-Patterson 6-3, 3-1 at #4, Wingfield led Webster 6-2, 5-2 at #5 and Hemming was on top of Rolston 6-0, 3-1 at #6.
The other unfinished singles match was at #1 where Roberg was ahead of Marshall 6-3, 3-2.
Marshall, Bosman, Hemming, Siri Carlson and Janell (Talbot) Lum all completed their Pirate careers.
