UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Led by first-year Luke Nelson, the Whitworth Pirates completed an impressive first round on Saturday at the Whitworth Chambers Bay Invitational at the premier Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place.
After a consistent day one round, Nelson shot an even par 72, landing in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings. His score leads the Pirates, who shot +7 (295) as a team and sit in third place in the team standings.
Mason Bradford and Andy Hobson each shot 74 (+2) and are tied for 11th place. Kallen Maioho is right behind them with a 75 (+3) and Max Hosfeld shot 79 (+7, T26th) to round out the Bucs' round one individual scores.
Sewanee University of the South leads the impressive NCAA DIII men's golf field with a round one team score of -3 (285). Linfield holds second place at 294 (+6) with Whitworth (295, +7) and Aurora (296, +8), close behind. Willamette (298, +10) and Gustavus Adolphus (299, +11) are within striking distance.
Linfield's Douglas Bailey holds the top spot individually with a 66 (-6).
The Whitworth men hope to continue their strong play on Sunday's round two. Hosfeld will be the first Pirate to tee off at 8:50 am.
