MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Third baseman Danny O'Brien went 5 for 5 with six runs batted in to lead 13th-ranked Montclair State to a 10-5 win over visiting Whitworth at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon in the Montclair Division III Baseball Regional.
The third-seeded Pirates will play Husson (Maine) in a loser's bracket game on Saturday morning at 11:00 am (EDT). The second-seeded Red Hawks take on top-seeded Endicott (Mass.) in a winner's bracket game at 2:30 pm (EDT) on Saturday.
Austin Paul led Whitworth (28-15) at the plate, finishing 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
O'Brien's two-run single in the bottom of the first got Montclair (31-9) on the board. Paul's two-run single up the middle tied the game in the top of the second.
The game remained tied to the bottom of the fifth when the Red Hawks struck for four runs on six hits. O'Brien was one of four MSU batters with an RBI single in the inning. Jaxon Grant's single to center field increased the lead to 6-2.
The Pirates got one back in the top of the sixth on Carson Coffield's sacrifice fly that scored Spencer Shipman. Whitworth cut the deficit to a single run with two runs in the seventh. Paul drilled a ball to right field that went for a ground rule double with runners on first and second for his third RBI of the game. Kyle Memarian followed with a sacrifice fly to get the Bucs within a run.
After the Red Hawks scored one in the bottom of the seventh, they put the game away on O'Brien's three-run double in the bottom of the eighth.
Nathaniel Kurano started on the mound for the Pirates and allowed six runs on ten hits in 5.0 innings. He had five strikeouts, but dropped to 7-4 on the season. Four Pirates followed in relief.
Colin Dowlen (8-2) started for Montclair and earned the win after giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits in 6.1 innings. Patrick Teehan threw two scoreless frames for his seventh save.
If Whitworth defeats Husson (24-17) in Saturday's first game, the Pirates will play the loser of the game between Montclair and 9th-ranked Endicott in the late game on Saturday.
