PASCO, Wash. – Whitworth scored four runs in each of the first two innings and cruised to an 11-2 win over Lewis & Clark to complete a sweep of the three-game Northwest Conference baseball series that began back on March 15.
The Pirates improved to 17-13 overall and 12-3 NWC in a game played at the Columbia Basin College baseball complex. Whitworth bounced back from two losses at Willamette last Saturday and heads into a weekend showdown at Merkel Field against Linfield (18-9 overall, 10-2 NWC) essentially tied for first place with the Wildcats.
L&C (14-13, 7-5 NWC) took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Will Michelman had an RBI double and Dylan Lee added an RBI single.
The Bucs answered with four in their half of the first. Caleb Gray's double drove in Spencer Shipman with the first run and Dominic Giusti singled home Carson Coffield. Nate Gray Jr.'s single brought home Gray and Giusti.
Whitworth sandwiched Gray Jr.'s second two-run single of the game between a pair of run-scoring wild pitches in the four-run second inning.
Kyle Memarian's RBI single in the third extended the lead to 9-2. The Pirates added two more in the eighth after loading the bases with no one out. Yash Gupta scored on Shipman's ground out and then Coffield scored Austin Paul with a sacrifice fly.
Whitworth pitchers dominated after the first inning, limiting the River Otters to only a pair of hits and no hits after the fourth inning. The Bucs used seven pitchers, including all three starters. Luke Stutesman (3-2) got the win after throwing a scoreless second. Dylan Huntsman threw two perfect innings in the fourth and fifth, while Owen Schneider tossed a pair of perfect frames in the eighth and ninth.
Owen Eisen (4-2) pitched only the first inning but got the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits. The Bucs scored their 11 runs on only eight hits, taking advantage of four walks and three hit batters from L&C pitchers.
Gray Jr. finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs to lead Whitworth at the plate. Memarian and Gupta also had a pair of hits apiece for the Pirates.
