FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Whitworth jumped ahead quickly and never let up in a 21-4 win at Pacific University in the Pirates' Northwest Conference opener on Friday evening at Hanson Stadium.
Whitworth (5-5 overall, 1-0 NWC) got goals from eight different players to roll past the Boxers (6-4, 0-2).
Five different Pirate players scored goals to lead Whitworth to a 5-1 lead late in the first quarter. Jordyn Bennett and Nikki Beers each tallied their second of the period to give the Bucs a 7-1 lead through the first.
Megan Whitman scored two straight to start the second period and Campbell Vincent added two in a row later in the quarter to lift the Pirates into an 11-1 lead with just under five minutes to play in the half. Vincent added one more with 21 seconds left in the period to increase the margin to 12-2 at halftime.
Kiera Paulus scored twice in the third as the Pirates continued to pull away, leading 15-3 heading to the final stanza. Whitworth outscored Pacific 6-1 in the fourth, getting two more tallies from Vincent and a pair from Peyton Green.
Vincent led the way with six goals, while Green and Bennett scored three apiece. Sierra Witte scored twice and led the team with three assists. Whitman had five ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls to go along with two goals.
Sarah Quade led Pacific with one goal, one assist and six draw controls.
The Pirates outshot the Boxers 35-15, including a 26-6 edge in shots on-goal. Whitworth led in ground balls 21-7 and won 15 of the 26 draw controls.
The Bucs will complete the NWC-opening weekend with a game at defending champion George Fox on Saturday afternoon.
