NEWBERG, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth opened its final road trip of the season with a 5-2 victory over George Fox in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Friday.
The Pirates moved to 10-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play. The Bruins fell to 7-8, 6-5 and are hanging on to the fourth spot in the NWC standings.
George Fox started hot and swept doubles to claim the first match point. Luis Hernandez and Joe Vece secured the point with a 6-2 win over Connor Judson and Matthew Morrison on the No. 3 court.
Whitworth flipped the script and won five of six singles matches. Hossack got things started with a 6-0, 6-4 win on the No. 6 court. Zach Moore followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Morrison to claim the second match point for the Bruins. The Bucs won the next four matches, three of which in two sets. Henry Preacher and Ryan Ashley each grabbed two-set wins to give Whitworth the advantage. Froslan followed with a competitive 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) match-clinching win in the No 5. Position. Judson closed the match with a three-set victory on the No. 4 court.
The Whitworth men will look to secure their third conference road sweep of the season on Saturday at Lewis & Clark at 11:00 am.
