SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth closed the first half of the Northwest Conference schedule with a 6-1 win over visiting Willamette in a women's tennis match on Sunday at Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates (6-2 overall, 6-1 NWC) extended their winning streak to six while the Bearcats fell to 1-7, 1-6 NWC.
The doubles point went to the Pirates in dominant fashion. Faith Kert and Clara Todd earned a 6-1 win in the No. 1 position before Audrey Judson and Olivia Corbett won 6-2 on the No. 3 court to secure the point. Paige Oliver and Jordan Turner-Esposito completed the Bucs' second doubles sweep of the weekend with a 6-2 win of their own. Judson and Corbett have now won six consecutive doubles contests.
Whitworth won five of six singles matches in two sets. Kert got things going with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 2 position. Oliver earned the third Pirate point with a hard-fought 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win in the No. 1 position. Judson clinched the match from the No. 4 position (6-2, 6-0) with her seventh straight NWC win. Josie Kellogg also won her seventh straight match by a score of 6-2, 6-3 and Hannah Wells earned her second conference victory from the No. 6 spot.
Sofia Spencer defeated Turner-Esposito 6-2, 6-4 to claim a point for Willamette.
The Whitworth women host three matches next weekend, the first being against visiting Whitman on Saturday before hosting College of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State College in a pair of non-conference matches.
