LOS ANGELES – Trailing by three goals in the final four minutes, visiting Whitworth University nearly rallied back to tie, but fell just short in a 12-11 loss to Occidental College in a non-conference women's lacrosse match on Wednesday night.
Campbell Vincent had five goals and two assists for the Pirates (3-5), who will complete their California trip with a game at Cal Lutheran on Thursday.
The Tigers (4-5) played from the lead most of the game. Oxy jumped ahead 2-0, 4-2 and 5-3. On each occasion Whitworth fought back. Vincent's goal with only 34 seconds left in the first half got the Bucs within 7-6.
The second half played out the same way as the Tigers took leads of 8-6, 10-8 and 12-9. Vincent scored her final goal with 2:42 left to get Whitworth within 12-10. After the Pirates won the draw control, Vincent assisted on a goal by Sierra Witte only 16 seconds later to pull Whitworth within one. The Bucs won the next draw control and Witte had a shot to tie the game with 1:46, but the shot was saved. Occidental got the ground ball and was able to run out most of the rest of the clock.
Occidental outshot Whitworth 29-23, but Kayla Jones and Charlotte Norton combined for 14 saves to help keep the Pirates in the match.
Witte finished with two goals and three assists, while Rose Frezza also scored twice. Megan Whitman had a goal, two assists, three ground balls and a career-high 11 draw controls. She helped Whitworth win 14 of the 25 draw controls.
