SPOKANE, Wash. – Competing primarily against themselves, the Whitworth track and field Pirates still posted some impressive performances on Monday and Tuesday at the Bucs Scoring and Multi-Event meet on Boppell Track.
Emily Brown's score of 4478 in the women's heptathlon may have already qualified her for the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships in May. She scored big points in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.75 (819 points) and in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:23.10 (782 points).
Jayce Palm won the decathlon with a score of 5,991 points. He was off to a blistering start on the first day, using a time of 11.16 in the 100 meters to spark a halfway score of 3,404.
Amblessed Okemgbo won the discus and the shot put. Her marks of 156'-10" in the discus and 46'-0" in the shot both currently lead Division III early in the season. The discus distance is also her personal record.
Kylie Loveless also hit a PR while winning the hammer throw (163'-8"). Devyn Chelin won the javelin (127'-5") to give Whitworth's women a sweep of the throwing events.
Briana Tira cleared 5'-2.5" to win the high jump, while Cadence Lorez won the triple jump (34'-3") and Shaloma McCoy won the long jump (15'-10.5").
On the track, Lilly Jones and Ashlyn Dary went first and second in the 800 meters in 2:18.68 and 2:19.75, respectively.
For the men, Eddie Vu matched Okemgbo with wins in both the discus and shot put. Vu went 168'-7" to win the discus and 51'-1.75" to win the shot.
Kaden Hooper's mark of 22'-7.75" in the men's long jump finished first and was a personal record.
Camden Schmidt sprinted to a win in the 100-meters with a time of 10.90, while Carter Sherry raced to a win in the 800 in 1:56.45.
The Pirate teams will be back in action on Friday when Whitworth hosts the Sam Adams Classic.
