Pirate women defeat Bruins in fourth straight win

NEWBERG, Ore. – Whitworth women's tennis completed its first full Northwest Conference road weekend with a 5-2 win over George Fox on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates (4-2 overall, 4-1 NWC) earned their first win over the Bruins (2-4, 2-3 NWC) since 2022 and completed their first NWC two-match road sweep since 2023.

Two dominant doubles victories secured the first match point for the Bucs. Olivia Corbett and Audrey Judson opened with a 6-0 shutout in the No. 3 match before Faith Kert and Clara Todd secured the point with a 6-1 win in the No. 1 match. Kylie Hull and Juhree Kizziar prevented a Whitworth doubles sweep with a 7-6 (13-11) tiebreaking win.

The Pirates clinched the match with three two-set singles wins. Judson came away with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 4 position and Josie Kellogg remained unbeaten against NWC opponents with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 5 spot. Kert earned her fourth straight win in the No. 2 spot with a 6-3, 6-0 victory to clinch a Whitworth win. Paige Oliver capped the weekend with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) three-set win in the No. 1 match.

Sophie Denham and Nicole Schnurbusch earned two singles wins for GFU in the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively.

The Pirate women will look to extend their winning streak next weekend (March 7-8) against Puget Sound and Willamette in Spokane.
