MCMINVILLE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth men's tennis displayed another gritty performance on the road, defeating Linfield 5-2 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (2-2, 2-1 NWC) came out on top of multiple tiebreakers to gain an edge and end the weekend with two wins. The Wildcats fell to 2-5, 2-2 NWC.
Whitworth swept the doubles matches for the second straight day. Matthew Morrison and Connor Judson came away with a 6-2 win in the No. 3 match before Ryan Ashley and Henry Preacher earned a 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot to secure the point. Matt Hossack and Matt Froslan secured the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (7-4) tie-breaking win.
Preacher opened the singles session with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 2 position. Linfield's Lerfald Brooks and Cameron Paulsen battled out two three-set wins to even the score. Froslan followed with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 win in the No. 5 match before Hossack clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot. Judson wrapped things up with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 three-set victory.
Judson now leads the team with 3 singles wins on the season, each coming at the No. 4 position.
The Whitworth men return to Spokane to battle Lewis & Clark and George Fox next weekend.
