WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitworth women's tennis team opened the double round robin Northwest Conference schedule with a 5-2 loss to defending NWC champion Whitman on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (0-2 overall, 0-1 NWC) earned two points with a pair of singles wins while the Blues (1-1, 1-0 NWC) took the double decision and remaining four singles matches in their first conference win.
Faith Kert and Josie Kellogg earned a 6-4 win in the No. 2 doubles match, but Whitman earned a pair of wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to earn the point.
The Blues took home commanding victories in the No 1 through No. 3 singles matches. Whitworth grabbed its first point of the match in the No. 4 position with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) tie-breaking win from Audrey Judson. Kellogg earned her first win of the season with a 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) battle in the No. 6 spot.
The Pirate women continue NWC action next weekend against visiting Pacific (Ore.) and Linfield on February 21st and 22nd.
