SPOKANE, Wash. – Two early goals spelled a 1-1 draw between Whitworth and visiting George Fox in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates moved to 2-5-2 overall and 0-3-2 in conference play. The Bruins now sit at 1-5-2, 1-3-2.
George Fox opened the match with an aggressive attack that resulted in four shots in the first eight minutes. Three of those shots came in one sequence, as a Bruin corner kick landed in the box near the far post. The Bucs blocked two shots attempts before Maxwell Visser found a gap and put GFU up 1-0 at the eight-minute mark.
Eight minutes later, a handball in the box gave Whitworth a penalty kick. Ryland Crane took the kick and fired it into the left side to even the score. It was Crane's first career goal. Both teams settled in defensively as shots on target were at a premium.
Whitworth had a quality look at a go-ahead goal less than a minute into the second half. Ralph Borromeo sent a well-placed header on goal, but it was knocked away by Bruin goalkeeper Chase Nelson.
Shots finished 13-11 and 4-2 in shots on goal, both in favor of George Fox.
Borromeo, Crane and Aaron O'Byrne led the Bucs with two shots each. Oliver Hart played the full 90 minutes in net and made three saves.
Zac LeVin led the Bruins with four shots, two on goal. Nelson made one save in net.
The Pirates are back in action tomorrow against Willamette at noon.
