FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Addyson Gallatin and Ashlyn Peterson led Whitworth to its most complete game of the season, a 69-44 win at Pacific University in a Northwest Conference women's basketball contest on Friday night.
The Pirates improved to 4-14 overall and 3-6 in the NWC, breaking an 11-game losing streak to the Boxers (8-11, 3-7).
Whitworth never trailed, jumping out to an 8-0 lead when Peterson sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Gallatin laying just 90 seconds into the game. Pacific got as close as 10-6 on a layup by Camryn Ngo, but would never get closer. The Bucs scored the next five points, including a try from Ava DePew, and led 17-9 at the end of the first.
Midway through the second quarter CC Size and DePew drilled back-to-back three pointers to extend Whitworth's lead to 29-13. Later in the quarter Size scored five straight points and Peterson converted a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds to give the Pirates a 38-15 lead at the break. Whitworth was strong offensively and defensively in the first half. The Bucs made 14 of 25 (56%) from the field and held the Boxers to only 18% (6-34). Whitworth was 5-9 (56%) from three-point range and Pacific was only 1 of 10.
Instead of letting Pacific gain momentum to start the second half, the Pirates continued to pull away from the Boxers. When Gallatin drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key at the halfway point of the third, Whitworth's lead reached 52-22 – its largest of the game. Shaade Williams hit a three-pointer at the Buzzer for the Boxers to cut the margin to 56-32.
Pacific got as close as 60-40 when Williams converted a three-point play midway through the fourth quarter, but the Boxers could get no closer.
Gallatin posted her first career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She made 10 of 17 points, her rebound total was a career-high and she tied a career-high five assists. Peterson also scored 21 points while adding five boards and four assists. Size finished with 10 points, while DePew led the squad with seven assists and three steals.
Whitworth finished the game 27 of 51 (53%) from the floor and 7-15 (47%) from three-point range. The Pirates had 20 assists on their 27 made shots.
Williams led Pacific with 19 points, the only Boxer in double figures. Pacific finished 15 of 64 (23%) from the field.
The Pirates will try to extend their winning streak to three in a row when they play at Willamette on Saturday afternoon (3:00 pm).
