GFU women overcome Whitworth 58-44

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox outscored visiting Whitworth 38-18 over the second and third quarters to defeat the Pirates 58-44 on Friday night in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game.

The Pirates lost their ninth straight game and fell to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in the NWC.  They will try to break that skid at Lewis & Clark College on Saturday.

For the second straight game Whitworth had a strong first quarter.  Ava DePew's three-pointer got the Bucs within 7-6 and her jumper put her squad ahead 10-9.  CC Size hit a three-point shot in the final 20 seconds to put Whitworth up 15-13 after one quarter.  The Pirates went 6-12 (50%) from the field, and 2-4 from three-point range, but would not make another three the rest of the game.

Whitworth took its largest lead when Ashlyn Neilsen scored to put the Bucs ahead 19-15.  George Fox (8-6 overall, 4-1 NWC) answered with a 10-0 run.  Hanne Hopkins scored to give the Bruins a 25-19 advantage.  GFU would never trail again, taking a 34-25 lead into halftime.  Whitworth's shooting fell to 4-13 (31%) in the quarter, 0-3 from beyond the arc.

The Bruins continued to pull away in the third quarter, going up 47-29 on Mia Skoro's basket.  GFU led 51-33 after three quarters, holding the Pirates to 28% (4-14) in the period.  The Bruins made 8-18 (44.4%).

Whitworth briefly cut the margin to 54-44 with 2:22 left on Mikiah Dunham's layup.  The Bucs could not get any closer and did not score again in the game.

Addyson Gallatin came back from two early fouls to lead Whitworth with 12 points.  Ashlyn Peterson added 10.  DePew totaled seven assists and seven rebounds.  The Pirates finished the game 17 of 48 (35%) from the floor, including 2 out of 12 three-pointers (17%).  The Bucs turned the ball over 20 times.

Kylie Ritter led George Fox with 15 points and Hopkins finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.  The Bruins made 21 of 56 (37.5%) from the field.
