WHITTER, Calif. – Whitworth bounced back from a disappointing result in the opening match of the Whittier College Invitational on Saturday to finish the tournament 2-2.
The Pirates fell to Chapman in five sets after holding a 2-1 lead but then swept host Whittier to move to 4-3 overall this season.
Whitworth will play at the Trinity University Invitational next weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
Game 1 – Chapman 3, Whitworth 2
Amblessed Okemgbo and Rylie Harnden had 12 kills apiece, but the Panthers rallied to defeat the Pirates 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-12.
After Chapman controlled the opening frame, Whitworth bounced back to win the next two in close fashion. The Pirates led 24-21 in each before the Panthers got within one point. Each time Whitworth was able to close the set on a Chapman mistake.
The Pirates fell behind 13-5 in the fourth set and the Panthers cruised from there. Whitworth led 9-8 in the final set after Harnden's kill, but Chapman took control with a 6-1 run.
Okemegbo added four service aces to finish with 16 points. Harnden had three block assists for 13.5 points. Mya Rodriguez dished 22 assists and served two aces, while Josephine Thompson had 13 assists and three aces. Whitworth served a season-high 13 aces in the match.
Olivia Sampson had 13 kills to lead the Panthers.
Game 2 – Whitworth 3, Whittier 0
The Pirates bounced back from the disappointing loss to sweep the host Poets 25-22, 25-22, 25-20, thanks to a season-best .294 team hitting percentage.
Whitworth fell behind 13-9 in the opening set and still trailed 21-19 before closing on a 6-1 run. Lindsey Short had the set-winning kill. In the second set the Pirates led 21-16 before Whittier rallied to within 23-21. Harnden's kill ended the frame.
Trailing 16-14 in the third set, Whitworth used a 9-2 run to go ahead 23-18. Alyssa Baird's kill ended the match.
Okemgbo had 14 kills, one ace and one block assist for 15.5 points. Lauren Kremer finished with 12.5 points on seven kills, one ace, two solo blocks and five block assists. Thompson and Rodriguez had 18 assists apiece.
Malena The had 10 kills to lead the Poets.
