Whitworth dominates in sweep of Whitman

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth swept visiting Whitman in dominating fashion during Tuesday night's Northwest Conference volleyball match at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates (9-4 overall, 3-0 NWC) never trailed once in their 25-15, 25-14, 25-17 win over the Blues (3-7, 2-1).

Lauren Kremer led Whitworth in points, kills, aces and blocks.

The Pirates rolled to the first set victory by hitting .486 with 20 kills and only three errors in 35 attacks.  Kremer was nearly perfect in the set, hitting .889 with eight kills in nine attempts.  Lindsey Short added four kills for the Bucs.

After Whitworth jumped to a 6-1 lead in the first set, the Blues fought back to tie it 7-7 on a Pirate attack error.  The Bucs' lead was only 14-12 when Whitworth finished on an 11-2 run.  Kremer served two aces, while Alyssa Baird and Rylie Harnden had three kills each.

The Pirates jumped ahead 6-1 again in the third game and never looked back.  Whitman got as close as 14-12, but Whitworth answered with a 6-1 run that put the set out of reach.  Amblessed Okemgbo's kill ended the match.

Kremer finished with 11 kills, while hitting .611.  She had three aces and three block assists.  Short and Okemgbo each had nine kills, while Josephine Thompson (20) and Mya Rodriguez (17) combined for 37 assists to lead the Pirates to a team hitting percentage of .347.

Sammy Holmer had eight kills, while Addie Belt added seven to lead Whitman.  Jamie Bartok led all players with 13 digs.

Whitworth, winners of 21 in a row against NWC opponents, will return to action on Friday night at Linfield in the Pirates' first conference road match of the season.
