Volleyball splits on day 2 of Whitworth Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates split results on the second day of the 2025 Whitworth Volleyball Classic on Saturday, sweeping Carleton but falling in five sets to Northwest University.

The Pirates are 2-1 after the first weekend of competition and head to Southern California next week for the Whittier Invitational.

Whitworth 3, Carleton 0 – The Pirates served 12 aces to defeat the Knights 25-21, 25-10, 25-15.  Carleton, from Minnesota, finished 0-3 at the tournament.

Lindsey Short had nine kills and hit .421 in the match to lead the offense.  She added two block assists for 10.0 points.  Amblessed Okemgbo added eight kills and served two aces for 10.0 points.  Lauren Kremer finished with 5 kills, two aces, one solo block and three block assists for 9.5 points.

Mya Rodriguez had 17 assists, while Josephine Thompson added 13 to direct the offense.  Olivia Paul had 12 digs and served four aces.

Rachel Bingham led Carleton with eight kills and two block assists.

Northwest (Wash.) 3, Whitworth 2 – The NAIA Eagles finished 2-0 over the weekend and improved to 6-0 overall with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12 win over the Pirates.

Whitworth had a huge comeback in the second set, overcoming an early 8-1 deficit to pull out its first set victory of the match.  The Bucs nearly had another in the fifth after trailing 13-7 before getting within 14-12.

Okemgbo finished with a career-high 21 kills and two block assists for 22.0 points.  Paige McKenzie, a first-year on the right side, had 10 kills and was in on three blocks for 11.5 points.  Alyssa Baird, another first-year, added nine kills. 

Rodriguez had 27 assists and Thompson added 25.  Kremer had one solo block and six block assists, while Paul had a career-high 22 digs and three aces.

Kaitlyn Mickle matched Okemgbo with 21 kills for Northwest.  Chloe Kennedy had 13 kills, while Kallie Budge finished with 10 kills and was in on five blocks.  Morgan Harter dished 47 assists.
