THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whitworth Pirates women's soccer squad opened the 2025 season with a narrow 1-0 loss to Whittier College in a neutral site non-conference match on Friday evening.
Nena Saldivar's goal in the 43rd minute was the difference for the Poets as she battled for a rebound off a shot from Lauren Young and found the bottom corner of the net.
The Pirates took seven shots in the match, but just one was on target and saved by Whittier's Mya Rodriquez. The Poets had 11 shots and put six on net.
First year player Sylvie Washington led the Bucs with two shots and played 84 minutes to lead all position players. Freshman Karlee Roderick made the start in net and made five saves. Alexa Deatherage had the lone shot on goal.
Whitworth will look to get their first win of the season on Sunday at Cal Lutheran at 11:00 am.
