FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Cody Hirano drove in pinch runner Gavin George with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning to lift Puget Sound to a 7-6 win over Whitworth in a first-round game at the 2025 Northwest Conference baseball tournament, host by Pacific University at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
The Pirates (25-16) fall into Friday's elimination game against Linfield at 10:00 am. The Loggers (25-15) advance to play Pacific in Friday's winner's bracket game at 1:00 pm.
Puget Sound took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Ryan Spero singled in the game's first run and then scored on Kahiau Teruya's ground out to third base. Teruya added an RBI single in the third to increase the UPS lead to 3-0.
The Pirates finally broke through against Loggers' starting pitcher Brett Harvey in the bottom of the fifth on Junior Garcia's first home run of the season, a two-run shot that drove in Kevin Corder.
Drew Kamihara's RBI single in the top of the sixth extended the Loggers' lead back to two runs. Whitworth was able to tie the game on a Puget Sound defensive miscue in the bottom of the seventh. An error at shortstop allowed Garcia and Corder to score the tying runs. But UPS was able to work out of the jam without further damage.
The Loggers had a good chance to win the game after scoring two in the top of the 10th inning. UPS loaded the bases with no outs and Kamihara drove in a run after getting hit by a pitch. Makana Murashige followed with a sacrifice fly.
Whitworth fought back once again, however. Corder delivered a two-out single to center field that drove in the tying runs. The Pirates could not repeat the magic in the bottom of the 11th. Whitworth had two runners on base thanks to singles by Kyle Memarian and Austin Paul. Carson Coffield was retired on a soft liner to shortstop to end the game.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Harvey went six innings and the Pirates scored three runs on six hits. Whitworth starter AJ Woodward allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk in seven frames.
Seth Mahler (2-3) took the loss in relief after giving up three runs on five hits in 3.0 innings. Zach Robman (2-2) lost the save for UPS in the 10th, but ended up with the win in the 11th.
