PORTLAND, Ore. – The visiting Whitworth Pirates resumed Northwest Conference play with a pair of five-inning losses to Lewis & Clark in a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Whitworth dropped game one 15-0 and fell 13-0 in game two.
The Bucs fell to 1-19 overall and 1-9 in the NWC while the Pioneers maintained a perfect 10-0 conference record (18-2 overall). The second doubleheader of the series will be played on Sunday at 11:00 am.
Game 1: Lewis & Clark 15, Whitworth 0 (5 inn.)
The Pioneer offense broke open the game early and the Pirates only mustered two hits.
A two-run triple put L&C on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. A double, hit batter, and walk plated three more before Gina Ozuna's grand slam gave the Pios a 9-0 lead. A single added another before a groundout ended the inning.
Four more runs crossed in the second for L&C after a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. A pirate throwing error in the third plated the final Pioneer run.
Reagan Ellis and Taylor Hofheins each singled as the only Pirates to reach base.
Reiss McIntyre (0-5) started in the circle and allowed 10 runs on four hits. Teeghan Reams pitched 2.2 innings of relief and Annie Brose pitched a scoreless fourth inning.
Maggie O'Leary allowed one hit in two innings and Ryan Jurischk earned the win in three innings of relief.
Game 2: Lewis & Clark 13, Whitworth 0 (5 inn.)
Whitworth suffered its third consecutive five-inning loss as Lewis & Clark's Charlize Pope stifled the Pirate offense with a complete-game shutout.
The Pioneers kept the bases busy with a small ball approach in the second inning. A two-run double and five bunts moved the line and pushed four runs across the plate.
A pair of RBI-singles and a Whitworth error resulted in three more L&C runs in the third.
The Pioneer offense put the game out of reach in the fourth. A two-run double and RBI single capped off a six-run inning.
Reams, Kelly Hruza and Camryn Sage recorded the three Pirate hits.
Momi Lyman (1-11) pitched 3.2 innings in the circle and Brose recorded the final out of the fourth.
Charlize Pope (5-1) walked one and struck out two in five innings.
