Brown posts national mark at NWC heptathlon

NEWBERG, Ore. – Emily Brown finished third in the heptathlon with a top-ten national mark, while Jalen Martin was fifth and Jayce Palm sixth in the decathlon on Monday and Tuesday at the Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championships, hosted by George Fox University.

Brown, a sophomore, shattered her own previous personal record score in the heptathlon with a total of 4,495 points.  Despite finishing third in the Northwest Conference, Brown's score is among the top-ten in Division III and surpassed her previous best by 424 points.

Linfield's Kira Hawaaboo won the heptathlon with a score of 4840, which moves her to third in the NCAA Division III standings.

Brown had a strong second day, moving up three spots on the heptathlon leaderboard.  She posted the meet's best time in the 800-meter run in 2:24.30.  She had the second-best mark in the javelin (111'-7") and the third-best in the long jump (17'-2.75").  On Monday her best event was the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.68, which was second.

Rylee Darnold finished 11th in her first NWC heptathlon with a score of 3,356.  Her best event was the shot put, posting the fourth-best throw of the meet (31'-7.25").  Shayla Hillstrom finished 12th with 3,270 points.  Both are first-year Pirates.

Martin, a senior, scored 5,842 points. Palm, a freshman, totaled 5,455 points in his first NWC decathlon.  George Fox's Blake Smith won with 6,642 points.

Martin had the meet's top mark in the high jump (6'-2") and second-best in the long jump (21'-5.25").  He was in seventh place after the first day and moved up two spots on Tuesday.  His best event on the second day was the javelin, in which he had the third-best distance (150'-8").

Palm was in fifth place following Monday's events.  He had the second-best shot put (37'-1.25") and third-best long jump (21'-2") on the first day.  His best event on Tuesday was the pole vault.  He cleared 11'-1.75" for the fifth-best mark out of 11 competitors.

Brown scored six points for Whitworth's women toward the 2025 Northwest Conference Championships.  Martin and Palm combined for seven points for the Pirate men.  The NWC track and field championships will take place April 26-27 at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.
