Pirates win 12-3 to take series at Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. – Quentin O'Conner pitched a complete game while Aidan Morrison and Caleb Gray hit home runs to lift visiting Whitworth to a 12-3 win over Lewis & Clark in the finale of a Northwest Conference baseball series on Sunday at Jerry Gatto Field.

The Pirates (12-6 overall, 3-3 NWC) won two of three over the weekend against the Pioneers (6-6, 2-4), thanks in part to three strong performances from each starting pitcher.

O'Conner (3-1) did not allow a hit until two were out in the bottom of the sixth and had retired 13 consecutive batters from the second until the sixth.  He only allowed three hits in the game.  One was a two-run double in the sixth and the other a solo home run by Brennen Davis in the eighth.  O'Conner struck out four batters and didn't issue a walk.

Morrison's three-run home run, his second round-tripper of the series, gave Whitworth a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning.  Gray immediately followed with his league-leading eighth home run of the season to put the Bucs ahead 6-0.

Austin Paul added a two-run single in the fifth to make the score 8-0.  In the sixth, Carson Coffield had an RBI triple and then scored on Ty Quiggle's single to increase the margin to 10-0.

Whitworth added two more in the top of the ninth, including Morrison's fourth RBI of the game on a double to left center field.

Morrison finished 4-6 with four RBIs and one run.  Kyle Memarian finished 4-5 with three runs scored, while Quiggle went 3-4 with a run and an RBI.  The Pirates had 19 hits in the game.

O'Conner's starting performance on the mound followed the efforts of AJ Woodward and Dylan Huntsman on Saturday.  Both threw seven strong innings.

Luke Ritter (1-1) started on the mound for L&C on Sunday and took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks in four innings.  Five Pioneers followed in relief, each throwing one full inning.

Whitworth will return home to host George Fox in a three-game set next weekend (March 22-23) at Paul Merkel Field.
