Whitman upends Whitworth lacrosse 13-8

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University could not sustain the momentum of a strong first quarter in a 13-8 loss to visiting Whitman College in a non-conference women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

The Pirates fell to 1-3 on a blustery, cold day.  The Blues improved to 2-2.

Trailing 2-1 midway through the first period, Whitworth scored three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Campbell Vincent had the final two in the last 3:24 and had three in the period.

Whitman responded by outscoring the Pirates 5-0 in the second for a 7-4 halftime lead.  Sarah Hawkins scored the first three of the period for the Blues.

Kenzie Hemman and Campbell scored early goals in the third quarter to pull Whitworth within 7-6.  But Whitman scored the next three to go ahead 10-6 through three quarters.

Megan Whitman's goal early in the fourth got the Bucs within 10-7, but that was as close as they'd get.  Whitman outscored Whitworth 3-1 the rest of the way.

Vincent's four goals give her 17 so far this season.  Hemman finished with two, while Whitman had a goal and an assist.

Hawkins led Whitman with four goals and three assists.  Lola McConaghy and Ellie Milesi each scored a pair.

The Blues outshot the Pirates 29-23 and had a 27-23 edge in turnovers.  Whitworth had a 14-10 edge in draw controls.

Sage Fosnock made eight saves for the Pirates, while Renn Novak stopped ten shots for the Blues.

Whitworth will be back in action during a spring break trip to Chicago when the Pirates take on Illinois Tech and North Central College on March 22 and 23, respectively.
