Pirate women close season with loss at Linfield

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth University women's basketball team closed the 2024-25 season with a 67-51 loss to Linfield in a Northwest Conference matchup on Saturday night.

The Pirates finished with an 8-17 overall record and 5-11 mark in the NWC. The Wildcats moved 19-5 overall,10-5 in the NWC and will compete in the NWC Tournament semifinals.

Whitworth trailed 16-8 after the first quarter. Both offenses were sluggish to start the game, and the score was tied at six with 3:45 to go in the quarter. Linfield was able to break the tie with a 10-2 run, five of those points coming at the free-throw line.

Ashlyn Peterson knocked down a jumper to start the scoring in the second quarter, but the Wildcats continued to stretch their lead. Linfield outscored the Bucs 17-10 in the quarter and took a 33-18 lead at halftime. Peterson led the way with 10 of the Pirate's 18 points. The Bucs shot 28.1% (9-32) from the field and 0-11 from beyond the arc through the first two periods.

The Wildcat lead continued to grow in the second half. Natalie Rosetti's layup gave Linfield its largest lead of the game 60-31 late in the third quarter. The Pirates battled and played a strong final frame in which they outscored the Wildcats 19-7. Keely Maves scored eight points in the quarter and the Whitworth defense held Linfield to just 2-14 from the field.

Peterson closed her impactful freshman season with a 15-point, three-rebound, three-assist and two-steal performance. Maves put up 15 points, three blocks, and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Alex Goetz had 10 points and two steals. Addyson Gallatin added three points and three blocks off the bench.

Whitworth shot 32.1% (18-56) from the field and made three of 18 (16.7%) three-point attempts. The Wildcats outrebounded the Pirates 47-31 and had a 40-22 advantage in paint points. Whitworth blocked a season-high eight shots.

Eve Burke had 17 points and Gillyan Landis scored 13 points with 11 rebounds to lead Linfield. The Wildcats shot 41.7% (25-60) from the floor.
