REDLANDS, Calif. – One day after posting 23 runs in a win at Redlands, the Whitworth baseball team was swept by the Bulldogs in a non-conference double header on Saturday at The Yard. Redlands won the opener 6-4 and the second game 11-5 to end a three-game losing streak and improve to 8-4. The Pirates fell to 4-3.
The teams will complete the four-game set with a single game on Sunday (11:00 am).
Game 1 – Redlands 6, Whitworth 4
The Pirates fell behind 4-1 before rallying to tie the game. The Bulldogs scored two in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the victory.
Kyle Memarian's double drove in the game's first run in the top of the fourth. Redlands answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-run double by Nate Miller.
The Bulldogs had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, but Whitworth limited the damage to a single run on a base hit by Jake Burgess. Relief pitcher Seth Mahler got the next two batters to pop out.
Whitworth rallied in the eighth. Ty Quiggle's single plated the first run and Memarian followed with a two-run infield single.
Redlands scored the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Barsness had an RBI triple to deep right-center field then scored on a wild pitch.
Memarian finished 2-3 with three RBIs to lead the Pirates at the plate. Quiggle also had a pair of hits as those two accounted for four of Whitworth's eight hits in the game.
AJ Woodward started on the mound for the Bucs and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks in five innings. Mahler (0-1) pitched the next three innings and allowed three runs on six hits and a pair of walks.
Erik Radder was the starting pitcher for Redlands, allowing only one run on four hits through 6.1 innings. Two pitchers followed in relief and Brett Edwards got the win in relief.
Game 2 – Redlands 11, Whitworth 5
Mark Kirkland, Rylan Morris and Ian Umscheid all hit home runs to lead the Bulldogs to a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader.
Redlands scored first in the bottom of the first when Morris scored on Kirkland's sacrifice fly. The Pirates took their only lead of the game in the third on Carson Coffield's two-run double.
The Bulldogs plated five runs in the fourth, the first run on a balk. The next two scored on the home run by Morris. Kirkland followed with a solo shot that made it 6-2.
Whitworth pulled within 6-4 in the fifth, the first run scoring on a balk and the second on Cole Weiland's RBI single.
Redlands stretched the lead to 9-4 with three in the sixth. Umscheid's two-run home run capped the rally. The Bulldogs added two more in the seventh, including an RBI single by Morris.
Bock Molenda hit a solo home run for Whitworth in the eighth.
Kevin Corder finished 2-3 for Whitworth with two runs scored. Memarian finished 2-5. No other Pirate had more than one hit. Morris was 3-5 with three RBIs, while Kirkland was 2-4 with three RBIs for Redlands.
Luke Stutesman (0-1) started on the hill for the Pirates and allowed six runs on ten hits in 3.2 innings. Jared Hardie followed with two innings of relief and gave up three runs.
Nathan Buchan (3-0) started for the Bulldogs and allowed four runs on five hits. Gavin Duenez went the final four frames for his first save.
