Green Knights pull away down the stretch to top Whitworth 59-49

HONOLULU, Hawaii – St. Norbert outscored Whitworth 12-2 over the final four minutes of the game to defeat the Pirates 59-49 on Sunday afternoon at the Hoops in Hawaii Classic on the campus of Hawaii Pacific University.

Whitworth (1-7) never led in the game, but hung with the Green Knights (4-4) throughout before forging a 47-47 tie with just over three minutes to play.

St. Norbert jumped ahead 10-1 just over six minutes into the game before the Bucs got five straight points by Ashlyn Peterson.  Whitworth trailed 12-6 after the opening quarter after missing 13 of its first 15 shots from the floor, including eight of nine three-pointers.

Trailing 17-9 in the second, the Pirates used a 9-3 run to get within 20-18 on a basket by Addison Gallatin.  After the Green Knights extended the lead back to 24-18, Peterson answered with a three-pointer and Ava Depew scored inside with 24 seconds left in the half to get Whitworth within 24-23.

SNC scored the first eight points of the third quarter, going ahead 32-23 on a layup by Taylor Thiry.  But once again the Pirates fought back, pulling to within 40-38 on a three-pointer by CC Size at the end of the third quarter.

Whitworth tied the game for the first time at 44-44 on an Alex Goetz three-pointer with seven minutes to play.  Three minutes later Peterson's trey tied the game a final time at 47-47 with exactly 4:00 to go.  After a quick steal, Whitworth had three shots to take the lead, but none found the bottom of the net.  Unfortunately, the Bucs went 1 for 8 from the floor and committed three turnovers in the final four minutes as the Green Knights pulled away.

Peterson led the Pirates with 20 points, while Size scored ten and Goetz finished with eight.  DePew grabbed ten rebounds.  Whitworth finished the game 17 of 60 (28.3%) from the floor, 9-29 (31%) from beyond the arc.  The Bucs also struggled at the free throw line – making only 6 of 16 (37.5%).

Thiry led St. Norbert with 28 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Whitworth will close its non-conference schedule and end its appearance in Hawaii with a game against Albion University on Monday.
