PORTLAND, Ore. – Whitworth University exploded for a season-high number of goals on the way to a 4-0 road win over Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.
Dominic Gusman scored a goal and assisted on another, while Ralph Borromeo had two assists to help the Pirates improve to 4-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the NWC. The Pioneers (0-9-1, 0-6-0) are still looking for their first win.
One day after scoring the only goal in Whitworth's 1-0 win at George Fox, Johny Cortez tallied what eventually was the game-winning goal against L&C in the game's 26th minute. He was set up on the goal by Gusman.
Gusman scored a goal in the 63rd minute when he converted a penalty kick. It is Gusman's first goal of the season.
Borromeo set up the next two Pirate goals. He assisted on the first goal of the season by Lucas Diaz in the 73rd minute. Ten minutes later Borromeo set up Lucas Joehnk for Joehnk's first goal of the year.
Whitworth controlled possession throughout the match, outshooting L&C 17-8 overall, including a 9-5 edge in shots on-goal.
Aiden Chase made five saves to post his second clean sheet of the season.
The Pirates will take a three-game winning streak into next weekend when the Bucs host Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
