Pirate women take down Wildcats 2-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's soccer squad battled to a 2-1 victory over visiting Linfield in a Northwest Conference match on Saturday at Whitworth Soccer field.

The Pirates (2-6-7 overall, 2-5-5 NWC) claimed a season-high scoring mark and extended their unbeaten streak to four contests, while the Wildcats (8-3-4, 6-3-2 NWC) were handed their third conference loss.

The Bucs came out with intensity and got on the board in the fifth minute with a Santa-Monica sister connection. Kayla Santa Monica dished a pass outside that was deflected to Maia Santa Monica at the top of the box, who blasted a shot into the left side of the net for her first score of the season. Whitworth held Linfield to just one shot in the first half.

Playing with the lead in the second frame, the Pirates maintained their tight defensive play and offensive pressure. After forcing a corner kick, Katherine Kent lobbed a well-placed ball into the box that found the head of Claire Nguyen who sent her first goal into the top left corner to double the Pirate lead.

Linfield would score a goal in the final minute on a free kick taken by Mia Curtaz from just outside the box.

Whitworth finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots and held the Wildcats to just two shots on goal to the Bucs' five. Both teams earned six corner kicks.

Maia Santa Monica led the Pirate attack with two shots on target. Nguyen and Emma Ellerd added a pair of shots. Karlee Roderick made the start at goalkeeper and made one save in 80 minutes, while Paige Broadrick finished the match in net.

Curtaz led the Linfield attack with three shots and Fia Swanson added a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Alexa Fritz made three saves.

The Whitworth women will look to continue their strong play next weekend in a pair of home matches against Lewis & Clark and George Fox.
