SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University and Whitman College traded second half goals within a minute of each other in a 1-1 Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates (1-6-7 overall, 1-5-5 NWC) played to their second straight draw while the Blues (3-4-8, 2-3-6 NWC) earned a point and took the season series.
The first half finished scoreless with both teams battling for chances. Whitman's Katherine Sand sent a pair of quality shots to the net, one knocked aside by a Whitworth defender, and one saved by Paige Broadrick. The Pirates had several transition chances but could not connect.
The Blues struck first in the second frame after a Whitworth turnover gave Emoree Lash clean look from near the top of the box that she put in the net at the 74:16 mark. The Bucs responded immediately with a goal at the 75:08 mark. Lily Parker sent a well-placed ball to the right side of the field for Faith Shaw, who dribbled to the goal line, made a quick move back to the middle and fired in a left-footed shot for her first goal of the season.
Whitworth nearly found the game-winning goal in the 85th minute when Kylee Russell charged in for a rebound and poked the ball into the net, but the play was called offside. With time winding down, Rebekah Hines appeared to be fouled in the box but play continued and no penalty kick was awarded.
Whitman doubled up the Pirates in total shots 18-9 and finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Maia Santa Monica led the Whitworth attack with two shots, both on target. Broadrick tied a season-high with seven saves in 77 minutes of action in net. Karlee Roderick played the final 12 minutes and made two saves.
Leah Barnes led all players with seven shots to lead the Blues' attack. Sand and Lash each added three shots on goal. Eleanor Johnson made one save at goalkeeper in the first half. Seanee Still played the second frame and made three saves.
The Pirates will look to come away with a win on Saturday against visiting Linfield.
