SALEM, Ore. – Whitworth University stormed back in the second half but fell just short in a 5-4 loss to Willamette in Sunday's Northwest Conference men's soccer match at Sparks Field.
In a tale of two halves, the Bearcats (4-5-7, 4-2-6 NWC) scored each of their goals in the first half and earned their first win over the Pirates (5-3-3, 5-2-3 NWC) since 2022, who trimmed the lead with three unanswered goals in the second frame.
Whitworth took an early lead in the third minute with Dominic Gusman's second goal of the weekend and seventh of the season. Jordan Voigt fed the ball to Gusman in the middle where he dribbled by several Bearcat defenders and fired a left-footed shot into to the bottom right corner of the net. Gusman has now scored in four of the last five matches.
Willamette responded with five consecutive first-half goals. Paddy Bell found Ky Iliev in the 16th minute followed by a goal by Lorenzo Trejo De Dios in the 23rd minute. Rory McKee scored a goal in the 27th minute and headed in another five minutes later. Daniel Hirai connected with Cody Stark in the 39th minute to put the Bearcats up 5-1.
The Pirates stormed back in the second half and cut the lead to one. The first goal came in the 76th minute on a long free kick taken by Aiden Chase that deflected off a Bearcat defender and into the net. Four minutes later, Chase sent another well-placed free kick into the box that Connor Bly headed into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Ethan Bell added his first goal as a Pirate in the 88th minute after the ball bounced around the front of the net and fired into the left side. Willamette held on for the final two minutes.
Both teams finished with 14 total shots. The Bearcats had an 11-3 advantage in the first half, while Whitworth had the same advantage in the second. Willamette had a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.
Gusman led the Pirate attack with four shots and two shots on goal. Johnny Finnegan added two shots on goal from the back line. Chase made four saves in the fill 90-minute effort.
McKee had four shots on target to lead all players. Stark added two shots on goal off the bench. Mikkel Jensen made two saves. Willamette's five goals were a season high.
The Whitworth men will head to Whitman on Wednesday.
