FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Lindsey Short pounded a dozen kills to lead visiting Whitworth to a three-set Northwest Conference volleyball win over Pacific University on Saturday night.
The Pirates (14-6 overall, 8-2 NWC) defeated the Boxers (4-12, 1-10) 25-19, 25-11, 25-20 to end a two-match losing skid.
Short had five of her kills in the opening set to get Whitworth off on the right foot. The Bucs built a 15-10 lead on a kill from Lauren Kremer before Pacific tied the set at 16 on an ace. Whitworth outscored the Boxers 9-3 the rest of the way. Short had three of her kills down the stretch, including the set-winner.
After the teams traded points early in the second, the Bucs went up 8-4 on a block from Kremer and Paige McKenzie. Short paired with Rylie Harnden on another block to make it 14-8 and Whitworth pulled away from there. Breanna Dodson served consecutive aces to close it out.
The Pirates broke away from a 4-4 tie in the final set with a 6-2 run. Whitworth built a 22-15 lead on Alyssa Baird's kill and closed out the match with a final block. Short had four more kills in the final game.
Short hit .400 and added two block assists for 13.0 points. Kremer finished with 12.0 points on nine kills, an ace and four block assists. Amblessed Okemgbo finished with eight kills. Josephine Thompson (18) and Mya Rodriguez (14) combined for 32 assists as Whitworth hit .269 in the match. Olivia Paul had 20 digs.
Emma Velcheck led Pacific with seven kills, while Logan Smith added six. The Boxers hit .112.
Whitworth will travel to play at Whitman on Tuesday night in its next match.
