SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University women's soccer squad fell 1-0 to the first place Pacific Lutheran Lutes in a wet Northwest Conference soccer contest on Sunday at Whitworth soccer field.
The Lutes advanced to 6-2-4 overall, 6-0-2 in conference play and earned their 12th straight win over the Pirates (0-6-5, 0-5-3 NWC), who are still seeking their first win.
Whitworth battled in a sloppy first half in which players struggled to find their footing. PLU edged the Bucs 7-5 in first half shots while the Pirates generated one more corner kick (3-2).
The Lutes turned up the pressure and broke through with the game winning score in the 76th minute. After a corner kick, a header was played to the right, where Katelyn McDougal looped it back towards net. Liv Olson was at the back post to head in her NWC-leading eighth goal of the season.
PLU finished the match with a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Lute offense produced six corner kicks in the second half. Whitworth did not take a corner in the second frame.
Emma Ellerd and Kylee Russell led the Pirate attack with two shots and one on target each. Riley Ng put a shot on goal in just 12 minutes of action. Karlee Roderick made four saves.
Ally Tattar led all players with four shots in the match for the Lutes. Olson led her team with two shots on net. Goalkeeper Abby Winkler made three saves.
