Pirate women break through with 1-0 win over Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Rebekah Hines' goal in the 64th minute lifted the visiting Whitworth women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Pacific (Ore.) in a Northwest Conference match on Saturday at Hanson Stadium.

The Pirates (1-6-5 overall, 1-5-3 NWC) earned their first win of the season and snapped a scoreless drought that spanned over eight contests worth of match time. The Boxers fell to 2-3-6 in conference play (3-5-6 overall).

Neither team could generate many quality looks in a defensive first half that totaled just five shots and one Pacific corner kick.

The Bucs turned up the offensive pressure and broke through midway through the second frame. Maia Santa Monica stole the ball near the sideline and took it to the net. She sent a shot that was saved by a Boxer defender and deflected out to Hines, who fired the ball into the back of an open net for her second score of the season.

Whitworth held on behind four saves from goalkeeper Karlee Roderick who earned her third shutout of the season.

Each team fired 10 shots in the match. The Bucs had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal while the Boxers had six corner kicks to the Pirates' one.

Six different Pirates had a shot on goal for the Whitworth attack. Emma Ellerd fired two shots and Kayla Santa Monica led the team with two shots on goal.

Cyd Sugiyama led the Boxers with two shots on goal. Kylie Pascual made six saves.

The Pirates will look to build on the win at Willamette on Sunday.
