NEWBERG, Ore. – Caleb Debban and Ryder Edwards combined on a three-hit shutout to lift George Fox to a 1-0 win over visiting Whitworth in a Northwest Conference baseball game on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Morse Field.
The Pirates (24-12, 12-10 NWC) and Bruins (22-16, 11-11 NWC) will complete the series with a doubleheader on Sunday after the weekend was rescheduled due to Saturday's wet weather.
George Fox scored it's only run on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the second by Blue Ellis that scored Jared Whitaker. Otherwise Whitworth starter Hunter Dryden (6-2) went the distance as the hard-luck losing pitcher. He scattered eight hits while striking out six batters and walking only two.
Debban (4-3) allowed only three hits and four walks through seven innings. Whitworth threatened in the top of the third after two walks with one out, but Debban struck out the next two batters. The Pirates had a chance to score in the seventh when Henry Zaske tried to score from second base on Dominic Giusti's two-out single to left field, but was thrown out at home.
Edwards retired the final six batters of the game in order for his fifth save of the season.
