SPOKANE, Wash. – Competing against the deepest field Whitworth will see at a home meet in 2024 and cold, wet weather, the Pirates showed up well on Friday at the Whitworth Peace meet on Boppell Track in the Pine Bowl.
There were 17 collegiate teams and more than 200 student-athletes competing on Friday.
Five Pirates will head to the Northwest Conference Multi-event Championships on Monday and Tuesday at Willamette University in Salem.
The Pirates won only one event on Friday, the women's 4x100 relay. Jordyn Lungo, Amelia Hewson, Isabella Pereira and Alison Ball posted a season-best time of 47.76. Hewson went on to finish third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.60 and seventh in the 100-meter dash in 12.59. Lungo was eighth in the 100 dash with the same official time. Ball took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.53 one week after breaking the school record (24.94).
Pereira also finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 34'-9", while Brianna Tira (33'-5.75") was 11th. Tira took seventh place in the long jump with a personal record of 17'-4.75".
Renee Tiumalu was fifth in the shot put (40'-6.75") and Amblessed Okemgbo was seventh (40'-2").
For the men, Solo Hines was the runner-up in the 200 dash with a time of 21.75, one of two second place finishes for the Bucs. Cooper Rolfs took fourth in the 400-meter dash with a personal record time of 50.43 and Cameron Lantagne was eighth in 50.95. Lantagne also finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with his personal-best time of 56.80.
James Dugenet hit a PR while taking sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:36.66) and Jack Ireton was eighth in 9:39.53. Alex Peters had a PR in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:03.92.
Zaanan Bane had a season-best mark in the 110-meter hurdles (15.70) and also took eighth in the triple jump (43'-4.5"). Riley Flanagan was ninth in the triple jump (41'-11.25") and hit a season-best distance while taking eighth in the long jump (21'-4.25").
Cody Wheeler was Whitworth's other runner-up on Friday, taking second place in the javelin throw (215'-5"). He also finished eight in the hammer throw (150'-2").
The Pirate men concluded the meet with a season-best time in the 4x400 relay. Rolfs, Lantagne, Kai Figueira and Isaac Akiyama went 3:23.80.
