TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth softball was shut down in Saturday's doubleheader at Pacific Lutheran, falling 5-0 and 2-0 in a battle for fourth place in the Northwest Conference standings.
The Pirates (13-21, 9-13 NWC) came into Saturday winning six of eight, but the Lutes (17-17, 12-10 NWC) put a stop to the hot streak with a pair of shutouts to propel them into third place, a game ahead of George Fox and three ahead of Whitworth.
Mackenzie Nine accounted for three of the Pirates' ten total hits across the two games, and Momi Lyman was solid through six innings of game two, allowing just a pair of earned runs in a losing effort. Whitworth has been shut out eight times now on the season, three times in April.
Game 1 – Pacific Lutheran 5, Whitworth 0
Five Lutes accounted for RBIs as they pounced on Pirate starter Corinne Vasiloff for five runs in the first three innings of the series opener.
Vasiloff (8-10) pitched six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits, including a scoreless three innings to close the game. Offensively, the Pirates managed just four scattered hits, and six total baserunners.
Molly House got it going early with an RBI-single up the middle to get PLU on the board, Casey Wright, Emma Ware, and Paolo Garcia added to the tally tagging RBI-base hits in the second to go up 4-0.
Rachael Rhineheart (6-8) was decisive against the Pirate lineup, fanning seven batters in the shutout. Whitworth managed to get runners to third with just one out in the second and fourth inning following leadoff doubles from Nine and Rusconi, but the Pirates couldn't capitalize.
Game 2 – Pacific Lutheran 2, Whitworth 0
Paolo Garcia delivered both RBIs for the Lutes with a first-inning double and a fifth-inning home run to clinch the Saturday sweep for PLU.
Lyman (4-10) was solid in her first outing of the weekend, allowing just seven hits including those two RBIs from Garcia which made all the difference. Lyman pitched six innings with two strikeouts a walk and seven hits allowed.
Nine led the Whitworth lineup with a pair of hits and a stolen base but the Pirates couldn't manage to match PLU. Chasing a pair of runs, Whitworth came up with hits in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning but never managed to bring them home.
Lute freshman Paige Wilson (5-3) earned a complete game shutout, capping a huge day for Pacific Lutheran. The Pirates will need to respond well on Sunday in order to keep tournament contention in site.
