SPOKANE, WASH – Whitworth defeated Whitman 16-5 on Sunday in a seven-inning, non-conference contest at Paul Merkel Field.
The Pirates (20-9 overall, 8-7 NWC) won both games on Sunday against Whitman (18-11, 12-6 NWC) to split the weekend series. The Bucs will travel to Portland, Oregon next weekend to take on Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference series. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
Whitworth's offense exploded for 16 runs on 13 hits to outpace the Blues, including 13 runs in the bottom of the second inning. Austin Paul highlighted the Bucs' offense with a perfect 4-4 game. Spencer Shipman notched his sixth home run of the season with a grand slam, and freshman Dominic Giusti recorded his first collegiate home run a two-run shot to left center.
Dylan Owen started on the mound for the Pirates, completing three innings of work with one earned run and four hits. Seth Mahler (3-0) pitched three innings of relief, allowing two runs while striking out six batters. Aidan Smith tossed the final inning, striking out all three batters he faced.
