Unbeaten Pirates top EOU 8-3

SPOKANE, WASH – Another scoreless start from Hunter Dryden and a big offensive showing led unbeaten Whitworth to an 8-3 win over Eastern Oregon University in Saturday's non-conference matchup at Merkel Field.

Whitworth (10-0, 2-0 NWC) is now just one game shy of the 2016 program record for longest unbeaten streak to start a season. The Mountaineers fell to 8-12 on the season. The Pirates and Mountaineers will complete the non-conference series with a double header on Sunday, first pitch of game one at 11:00AM.

Three Pirates hit home runs to help Whitworth beat Eastern Oregon.

Whitworth's offense was first to strike in the third inning. Aidan Morrison hit his third home run of the season; a solo shot to right field. Spencer Shipman tacked on another run in the fourth inning for the Pirates with another solo home run; his fourth home run of the season.

Jacob Doughty batted the third home run of the game in the fifth inning, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. The Bucs at this point in the game had three hits, all solo home runs.

Whitworth's offense did serious damage in the sixth inning when Aaron Clogston singled for two RBI's and Morrison followed with a three-run single of his own.

The Mountaineers scored their first run of the game on Mario Landeros' RBI double to left field in the seventh inning.

In the eighth inning, Eastern Oregon inched closer tacking on one more run with Parker Cumberland's sacrifice fly out. Trevor Baker hit an RBI single to left field in the ninth inning to shrink the Pirates lead but the lead was too much to overcome.

Dryden (4-0) continued his dominance as he went five innings pitched while allowing one hit and no runs and punching out seven batters. Dryden has now extended his own program record, having pitched 23  scoreless innings to start the 2024 season. Reliever Tyler VanCise (Sv 1) tossed four innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

Brock Cordes (1-4) started for the Mountaineers and allowed eight runs on four hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Seven walks came back to hurt Cordes.  Tyler Rebsom pitched 1.1 innings of relief and allowed no runs on two hits. Ryan Etzkorn pitched the final inning for Eastern Oregon and allowed no runs or hits.
