George Fox races past Whitworth 19-7

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox used strong first and fourth quarters to run past visiting Whitworth 19-7 in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match on Sunday afternoon at the Austin Sports Complex.

Whitworth (4-1, 1-1) saw its school-record four-game winning streak come to an end against the seven-time NWC champion Bruins (2-1, 2-0).

The Pirates scored first when Campbell Vincent tallied her 13th of the season from an assist by Megan Whitman just over two minutes into the contest.  But GFU scored five straight over the rest of the period, including two each by Olivia Geyling and Carleigh DeLapp.

The Bruins led 10-3 at halftime, including another goal by Geyling.  Caitlin Smith scored during a player-up situation in the second and Whitman scored later in the period.

Trailing 12-3 early in the third, Whitworth scored three consecutive goals to get within 12-6.  Vincent's second goal of the match was sandwiched between goals from Abby Hahn and Rebecca Irwin. Sierra Witte's goal with two minutes left in the third pulled the Pirates within 13-7.

Whitworth would not score again.  Geyling tallied again late in the third and Delapp scored early in the fourth as the Bruins put the match away by outscoring the Bucs 5-0 in the final period.

GFU outshot Whitworth 36-22, including a 30-15 edge in shots on-goal.  Sage Fosnock made 11 saves in net for the Pirates.

Vincent, who leads the team in goals this season with 14, was the only Whitworth player with more than one in the match.

Geyling led the Bruins with seven goals.  Marena Tharpe had two goals and five assists.

The Pirates will have next weekend off before returning to action on Wednesday, March 20th at Whitman.
