KERRVILLE, Tex – Whitworth completed a second baseball series sweep of the season after Sunday's 6-1 win at Schreiner University on Bob Henry Field.
The Pirates are now 7-0 for the first time since they started the 2016 season 11-0. Schreiner fell to 2-9. Whitworth will look to continue the unbeaten streak next Saturday when they return to Spokane to open Northwest Conference play against Pacific Lutheran University at Merkel Field.
The Bucs scored in the first inning for the third time in the series when
Kevin Corder singled to score
Elijah Tanner from second base.
Jacob Doughty followed up with a ground out that scored the Pirates' second run.
Schreiner's Tyler Juarez singled in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Bucs' lead in half.
A
Spencer Shipman single, followed by an error allowed the Pirates to pick up a single run in the sixth inning. Three more final runs came across for Whitworth in the seventh after a
Blake Barrett two RBI double and
Henry Zaske's RBI ground out.
Tanner highlighted the Bucs' offense with a three-hit game, his third three-hit game with of the season.
Whitworth's offense has been extraordinary thus far into the season. The team has produced a .313 team batting average and scored 71 runs across its first seven games.

Conner Ashworth followed suit on Sunday. Ashworth (1-0) pitched five innings and allowed just one run on two hits while fanning six batters. In relief
Dylan Huntsman and
Mason Burkhardt had mirror stat lines with two innings pitched and no runs on one hit.
The Mountaineers' starter Nolan Sauceda (0-2) made it through six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits. Schreiner used five relievers across the remaining three innings.
