SPOKANE, Wash.— Sullivan Menard scored a career-high 39 points on senior night, including 26 in the first half. Jake Holtz scored nine to reach 1,004 in his career, and Whitworth pulled away from George Fox 94-81 on Saturday in the Fieldhouse.
In his last regular season game at home, Menard brought a packed house to its feet over and over as he buried seven threes including two four-point plays to lead Whitworth to the season sweep of George Fox.
"It was super fun, one of our best crowds all year. Just one of those moments where I felt super confident that everything I was shooting was going to go in," said Menard. "It's awesome to have coaches and players who keep looking for me, so I just feel super blessed."
Whitworth is now two wins away from an outright conference title and home court advantage in the tournament. They haven't won an outright regular season title since 2015-16.
"Winning an outright regular season title is so hard to do, and to have that in front of us is an exciting opportunity," said coach Damion Jablonski.
JoJo Anderson added 21 points and four assists, senior Jerry Twenge added another 11, and if the scoring wasn't enough Menard also led the team with 12 rebounds for a monster double-double. Whitworth shot 50.8% from the field (and 10-21 from three) while finishing 22-31 from the stripe. The Bruins committed 26 fouls and were backed into the double bonus most of the night.
George Fox (14-9, 7-7 NWC) will go into the final weekend of the season in a fight for a birth in the four-team conference tournament after two losses this weekend. Momo Stokes led Fox with 30 points on 9-14 from the field, James Moore added 21 points including five 3-pointers.
Menard fittingly drilled a 3-pointer on the games opening possession, scoring 10 points in the first eight minutes, but Whitworth fell behind 20-13 as Moore and Stokes led a 9-0 Bruins' run. The Bruins led for most of the first half, but Menard converted a four-point play, a pull up three and a layup to keep Whitworth within five late in the half.
Anderson got into the action with seven straight points to fuel a 10-1 run for the Pirates to close the half, they took a 40-37 lead into the break. Menard had 26 points in the half including five threes.
Menard buried two more in the second half, including one through contact with 6:06 to play that gave Whitworth a 76-65 lead.
"I was on the ground after that shot, I heard the crowd but I hadn't really seen it go in and Ty came over to pick me up and I was like 'Did it go in?' and he was like 'Yeah it went in.' Just that kind of night, it was really cool," said Menard.
With 5:28 to go, Holtz converted a put back at the rim to surpass 1,000 career points and put Whitworth up 78-67. Holtz has been a model of consistency for Whitworth in his career, he's appeared in every game for the last two seasons.
The Pirates shot 18-32 in the second half, riding the momentum of that raucous crowd as they separated from the Bruins to close out their fourth straight win.
Whitworth will finish up the regular season next weekend with road tests against Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound. One win will clinch them homecourt advantage in the NWC tournament, but two would win them an outright conference title.
"There's a lot on the line," said Jablonski. "Every team has a lot on the line right now so it'll be a great challenge next weekend."
