PORTLAND, Ore. – Three second half goals lift the Pirates to a hard fought 3-2 win over Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (11-4-2 overall, 9-3-2 NWC) won their sixth straight match for the first time since 2010 and swept the season series with the Pioneers (4-11-3, 2-10-2). The last time Whitworth women's soccer won six matches in a row was the 2010 season.
The Pioneers got on the board first in the 38th minute as Celeste Schreifels headed in a free kick from Carli Driskill. The Pirates were held to just five total shots and one shot on-goal in the first half.
Whitworth would respond in the 67th minute when Claire Nguyen headed the ball just inside the post off a long free kick from Katherine Kent. Just two minutes later, the ball caromed around the box before Emma Ellerd lofted the ball just over the keeper to give the Pirates the lead.
Lewis & Clark would find the equalizer in the 81st minute after Kate Meinhard deflected a free kick just inside the post. With three minutes left to play, a cross from Baylee Trejo found the foot of Lily Cardenas who one-timed the ball into the back of the net for the game winner.
Whitworth would finish this back-and-forth battle with a 17-13 advantage in total shots, while shots on-goal were even at six. Anna Boyer made four saves for the Pirates and Anna Ingadottir made three saves for the Pioneers.
The Pirates head back to Whitworth Soccer Field to host Pacific Lutheran (Nov. 9th) and Puget Sound (Nov. 10th) next weekend.
