PORTLAND, Ore. – Cole Friesen's record-breaking day gave the Pirates a 3-0 win over Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates won their fourth straight match and improved to 10-6-2 overall and 8-4-2 in the NWC. The Pioneers drop to 0-18 and 0-13 in the NWC.
Cole Friesen scored his twelfth goal of the season and 39th of his career, breaking the record for most career goals in Whitworth men's soccer history, surpassing the previous mark of 38 career goals held by Karl Muelheims (2015).
Friesen's goal came in the first minute of the match after running down a cross from Beckett Arthur near the goal line, taking a dribble to get a better angle and firing the ball into the top-right corner of the net. He would add a second goal of the match and 13th of the season in the 76th minute off a corner kick from Dominic Gusman.
The Pirates would score their third goal of the match in the 84th minute after Cole Friesen won a ball in the middle third and advanced it to Clayton Crockett, who sent a shot past the goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the season.
Whitworth maintained consistent offensive pressure and finished the match with 22 total shots and seven shots on-goal. The Pirates were strong in their defensive end as well, holding the Pioneers to just four total shots and two shots on-goal. Aiden Chase made two saves for Whitworth and Declan Cloutier made four saves for Lewis & Clark.
Whitworth will look to extend their winning streak when they host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday (Nov. 9th).
