Peterson pushes Pirates past Wolves 67-59

SPOKANE, Wash. – Ashlyn Peterson's season-high 24 points lifted Whitworth to a 67-59 win over visiting Walla Walla on Thursday night.

The Pirates (2-1) overcame 26 turnovers to hand the Wolves their third loss (2-3).

A three-pointer from Jaylo Bello pushed the Wolves out to a quick 11-2 lead to start the game. Whitworth chipped away and closed the gap to 15-7 after a three-pointer from Alex Goetz with 4:00 minutes left in the first quarter.

The Pirates adjusted defensively and used 53.8% shooting to outscore the Wolves 17-11 in the second quarter. Julianna Jeross finished the quarter with a layup and a three pointer to get the Pirates to within three at the half. Walla Walla forward Chariah Daniels led the Wolves with ten points at halftime while Ashlyn Peterson led the Pirates with eight.

The Whitworth offense started hot in the third quarter after Ashlyn Neilsen gave the Pirates a 34-32 lead with a three-pointer. The lead would not last long as Chariah Daniels hit two free throws to give Walla Walla a 42-40 lead with 2:29 left in the third. Daniels scored the last eight points of the quarter for the Wolves, but a Mya Bair driving layup with seven seconds left put the Pirates up by two heading into the fourth quarter.

This lead would not be surrendered as Whitworth outscored Walla Walla 21-15 in the fourth quarter. Chariah Daniels' layup cut the Pirate lead to three with 30 seconds left in the game, but Mya Bair and Ashlyn Peterson sunk five straight free throws to put the game on ice.

Whitworth finished the game shooting 43.9% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Ashlyn Peterson's led the Bucs with a season and career high 24 points on 8-13 shooting. She was the only Pirate in double figures, as Addyson Gallatin added nine points and Keely Maves scored eight. Mya Bair led the team with 12 rebounds from the guard position.

Chariah Daniels filled the stat sheet to lead the Wolves, finishing with a game-high 25 points, along with 11 rebounds and six steals. Walla Walla finished the game shooting 35.7% from the field.

The Whitworth women head to California to play Caltech on Saturday.
