Four Pirates earn All-Region recognition

ESTACADA, Ore. – Three Whitworth University men and one woman earned All-Region honors at the NCAA Division III West Region Cross Country championships held at McIvor State Park.

Alex Peters, London Haley and James Dugenet all posted top-35 finishes to earn the All-Region recognition for the Pirate men.  Whitworth finished in sixth place out of 24 schools and likely just missed an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III championships.

Quinn White finished first for Pomona-Pitzer, covering the eight-kilometer course in 24:01.1.  Three of the top six, and four of the top 12 runners were Sagehens to lead Pomona-Pitzer to the team title.

Peters took 15th place in 24:39.7, followed by Haley in 26th (24:58.3) and Dugenet in 29th (25:01.7).  Isaac Akiyama crossed in 43rd position (25:26.9) and Alex McIntyre was 53rd (25:42.6).

Pomona-Pitzer won with 42 points, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was second with 101 and George Fox was third with 127.  UC Santa Cruz was fourth (132), Colorado College fifth (138) and Whitworth sixth (162).  Other Northwest Conference schools included Lewis & Clark (9th , 251), Whitman (10th, 255), Puget Sound (11th, 316), Pacific Lutheran (18th, 518), and Linfield (19th, 548).

Abby Staley led the Pirate women by earning All-Region recognition with her 29th place finish in 22:04.1.  Riley Capuano of CMS won the race by covering the six-kilometer course in 20:54.1, defeating NWC Runner of the Year Riley Buese of Lewis & Clark by six seconds.

Kezlie Thygesen finished 53rd in 22:55.3, Lulu Brady was 62nd in 23:09.2 and Ashlyn Dary took 70th in 23:21.9.  Kaydence Carrington was the Pirates' fifth runner in 122nd place (24:44.6).  Whitworth scored 334 points for an 11th place finish.

CMS won the meet by only one point over Colorado College, 61-62.  UCSC was third (96) and George Fox was fourth (133).  Other NWC schools included L&C in seventh (218), Willamette in 10th (312), Puget Sound in 14th (390), Whitman in 15th (400), Pacific in 19th (496) and Pacific Lutheran in 21st (500).
