SPOKANE, Wash. – Beckett Arthur put the Pirates on the board first, but the score would not hold as Whitworth played to a 1-1 draw against Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates finished their season with a 10-7-2 overall record and an 8-5-3 mark in the NWC. The Loggers finished at 6-6-7 and 5-4-7 in the NWC.
Puget Sound had an attacking chance in the 16th minute when Jackson Smith knocked down a corner kick and fired a shot towards the bottom corner of the net, but Aiden Chase made an athletic diving stop to keep the Loggers scoreless.
Whitworth took the lead in the 70th minute when Cole Friesen took a free kick from outside the box that Kincaid Sund sent towards the net before it was saved and followed up by Beckett Arthur for his fifth goal of the season.
The Loggers would even the score just a minute later in a similar fashion as a free kick was saved by Aiden Chase before being tapped in by Shea Ansell near the goal line.
Whitworth held a strong advantage in shots (16-6) while also leading 6-3 in shots on-goal despite the knotted score.
After the match, Pirates head coach Kevin Moon reflected on the leadership of the senior class and will be forever grateful for the trust they helped build within the team.
"We are going to miss this senior class tremendously," Moon said. "They have set the standard for future classes to follow and have been amazing in their performances on the field and leadership off the field."
Pirate men's soccer will be back in action next September.
