SPOKANE, Wash. – One night after using a strong service game to rally to a win over Willamette, Whitworth continue to dominate behind the serving line in a Northwest Conference volleyball sweep of visiting Lewis & Clark on Saturday night.
The Pirates (14-2 overall, 6-0 NWC) served a season-high 16 aces in a 25-16, 25-10, 25-6 victory over the Pioneers (0-13, 0-6).
Cassidy Franklin had a career-high five aces, Taylor Miche added four and Josephine Thompson had three to combine for 75% of Whitworth's aces. The Pirates had set a season-high mark of 11 aces last night in the win over Willamette, but that took five sets. Whitworth scored almost as many points off aces as the Pioneers had in the entire contest (17).
The Pirates never trailed and the first set was tied only once at 1-1. Whitworth hit .435, the team's second-best hitting percentage of the season and the second time the Bucs have been over .400 for a match. After hitting .345 in the opening set and improving to .389 in the second, the Pirates dominated in the final set with a .591 percentage, drilling 14 kills with only one error in 22 attempts. In comparison, L&C had 16 kills for the match.
Ella Jimenez led the way with 11 kills and 12.5 points. She hit .529 with two errors in 17 attacks. Amblessed Okemgbo added seven kills and hit .357, while Abigail Hudson had six kills and hit .556. Josephine Thompson had 15 assists and Megan Lange had eight, but eight of Whitworth's kills came on overpasses by the Pioneers.
Ella Ruark had half of L&C kills (8) and hit .304 in the contest. No other Pioneer had more than three kills.
Whitworth will take its unbeaten conference record into a first place showdown at Pacific Lutheran (11-4, 6-0) next Friday.
