Whitworth runners show well in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Abby Staley finished seventh in the women's six-kilometer race and London Haley took 12th on the men's eight-kilometer course on Saturday at the Whitman College open held at Veterans Memorial Golf Course.

Staley led the Pirate women to a fifth-place finish, but first among NCAA Division III teams.  NCAA Division I Gonzaga won the meet, just ahead of Washington State. 

Staley finished in 22:17.30 to lead the Bucs.  Gonzaga's Anna Grabowski won the meet with a time of 21:30.0. 

Ashlyn Dary took 17th for Whitworth in 23:07.7 while Kezlie Thygesen crossed in 24th in 23:27.5.  Lily Jones was 41st in 24:25.4 and Courtney Osborn finished 45th in 24:39.6.

The final women's team scores were: Gonzaga 26, Washington State 42, Northwest Nazarene 92, Eastern Washington 116, Whitworth 122, Whitman 172, Puget Sound 174.

The men's meet featured the same teams, except for WSU and EWU.

Haley ran a time of 25:08.5 over the longer distance.  Brody Kemble of NNU won the race with a time of 24:30.9.

Alex Peters followed for Whitworth in 22nd place with a time of 25:30.2 with James Dugenet in 24th in 25:38.5.  Isaac Akiyama was 31st in 26:00.3 and Alex McIntyre took 35th with a time of 26:23.0.

The final men's team scores were: Gonzaga 21, NNU 47, Whitworth 87, Whitman 103, Puget Sound 129.

The Pirates will return to action on October 19th at the Linfield Invitational in McMinnville, Oregon.
