NEWBERG, OR. – Whitworth controlled possession and shots on the way to a 3-0 win over George Fox in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The visiting Pirates got their fifth conference win of the season (7-4-2, 5-3-2) while the Bruins drop their second straight match (5-7-2, 2-6-2).
Yacine Bitibale got the scoring started in the 33rd minute as she hit a strike from a tough angle outside the box just past the reach of the GFU goalkeeper to give Whitworth a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Baylee Trejo added a goal with a great assist from Clair Nguyen. Lily Cardenas rounded out the scoring for the Pirates after working past a defender and netting a goal in the 60th minute.
Whitworth showed consistent offensive pressure in the first half by outshooting George Fox 17-4 and adding three corner kicks. The Pirates maintained their play throughout the second half by finishing with 25 shots and 17 shots on goal. The Bruins were held to just six total shots and four on goal throughout the match. Nine Pirates finished with a shot on goal.
Emily Robey totaled ten saves and Isabella Brown added two more for the Bruins. Anna Boyer made four saves for the Pirates.
Whitworth has not been defeated by George Fox since 2018.
The Pirates will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday in a match against Whitman in Walla Walla.
